The short answer is YES, you can keep your wedding ring in federal prison. The Federal Bureau of Prisons policy says that you are permitted a wedding band without stones or intricate markings (Program Statement 5580.08). Other personal items that you can retain in federal prison are prescription eyeglasses; medical or orthopedic devices; legal documents; earrings with no stones for females only with declared value under $100; and a religious medallion with chain with a declared value under $100.

You are also allowed to bring your Social Security card and other identification but it will be held in your central file. If you are self surrendering make sure to be wearing these items when you arrive and they will be processed with you when you enter the prison (Program Statement 5580.08 Ch.7) However, if someone is already in prison you can only have a wedding band and legal documents sent in. Those other items can only be obtained through the prison. Health Services provides eyeglasses (very little to no selection of frames, you get what they give you), prescription medications, medical or orthopedic devices; and religious items can be purchased through a special purchase order (SPO) through the Religious Services Department.
